The Football Association are investigating events in which a man was stabbed outside Upton Park. Three pitch invasions also took place, with the FA calling for those identified in CCTV footage of the violence to receive life bans. Hundreds of supporters had been involved in violence close to Upton Park underground station before and during the match resulting in the arrest of 13 people. Police claimed that the skirmishes outside had been triggered by those without tickets. Triesman said: "Like everyone else, I was horrified and appalled by what took place at West Ham. "If CCTV and other evidence can prove who has caused this, then football and the courts must take the strongest action against them. "They must be banned from the game and I would hope the courts would hand out the most severe sentences possible. "Football has worked very hard to make our game one which is safe and enjoyable for everyone. "There will be a full and thorough inquiry and we must hope this was merely a blip."
