Hammers end on a high

West Ham rounded off their trip to China with a 2-0 victory over Beijing Guoan in the Asia Trophy on Friday. Late efforts from Danny Gabbidon and Zavon Hines helped the Hammers seal third place in the Far East tournament, but there is much to work to be done by the Premier League side ahead of the new season. Gianfranco Zola's side made a positive start to proceedings, but were all often pegged back by a lively Beijing attacking unit. West Ham did enjoy plenty of possession, but found lone frontman Carlton Cole isolated on too many occasions. Kieron Dyer looked the most likely to link up with the England striker, but he was haunted by the assistant referee's flag. Progress He did get the ball in the net as the first half came to a close, with a smart finish from a tight angle, but he was adjudged to have strayed offside for the umpteenth time. The Hammers continued to make little progress throughout the second period, despite the game opening up as tired legs began to tell. Dyer's willingness to get forward will have pleased Zola, but his front line looked toothless in truth. In the end it was left to centre-half Gabbidon to put West Ham en route to success as he rose highest to meet a Mark Noble corner 10 minutes from time. With Beijing piling men forward, Hines was then allowed to race clear in stoppage time to put the seal on a satisfying, but uninspiring, victory.
