Green should be England's No 1, insists former West Ham and Leeds hero Mervyn Day

Former West Ham and Leeds stopper Mervyn Day believes the debate over England's goalkeeping problem is 'nonsense' and insists Robert Green should be Fabio Capello's No1 choice. Green made some vital saves during England's 5-1 win over Croatia in Wednesday night's World Cup qualifier and Day believes that the worry over the key position is unnecessary. The 54-year-old, who made 227 appearances for Leeds, says West Ham keeper Green has shown he is the most consistent goalkeeper in the Barclays Premier League. He said: 'All this carping about what we're going to do about the goalkeeping slot and the concern over David James' age and that there's no successor I think is complete nonsense. 'For the last couple of years Greeny has been the most consistent English goalkeeper in the Premier League. His reactions are excellent. 'I'll nail my comments to the cross now and say I think he is the best best English goalkeeper in the League.' Successive national managers have failed to find a 'keeper they can totally rely on but Day, currently a scout for Fulham, believes the England manager has been given the answer. 'Green has played a lot of games for West Ham and the England side now and one or two of the other goalkeepers who have been mooted haven't got the experience. 'Capello is never going to come out and say Green is his number one and he never will as the competition for places is a good thing. 'The quality of a national goalkeeper is determined by experience and the ability to concentrate for a full 90 minutes. Green has both of those qualities where the others haven't.' Mervyn Day is a consultant on the football council for Championship Manager. The new experience, Championship Manager 2010 is out on Friday.
