Grant calls on players to refrain

West Ham manager Avram Grant has joined counterpart Harry Redknapp in calling for footballers to give up alcohol to prolong their careers.[LNB] The history of drinking within football has been well documented, with the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Paul McGrath and Tony Adams just a few of those who have admitted to a battle with alcoholism throughout their careers.[LNB]A recent spate of salacious allegations linked to drinking has done little to improve the reputation of footballers in the wider world.[LNB]Redknapp had to deal with several alcohol-related incidents last season and he insisted yesterday English players must give up drinking if they are to enjoy careers similar to their foreign counterparts.[LNB]Grant echoed those calls today, saying he would support a move to end players drinking in their careers.[LNB]When asked whether he agreed with Redknapp's call for players to give up drinking, the Hammers boss said: "I agree. Alcohol disturbs you, cigarettes disturb you.[LNB]"I don't thinks cars are a problem but I think young footballers shouldn't drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes.[LNB]"There has been research that shows that it disturbs you, it does not help you to be better.[LNB]"I'm not just talking about when you are drunk and you do things you don't need to do."
