Gold: West Ham want debt-ridden Pompey relegated on the pitch not off

20 February 2010 01:06
Just a day after offering to save Portsmouth with a £10million loan, West Ham co-owner David Gold has admitted he would happily 'cheer Pompey all the way to the Championship' - but only if they are relegated for failings on the pitch, not financial difficulties off it. [LNB]Gold said: 'Everyone here is hoping they get relegated. It is human nature. We want three clubs relegated and if Portsmouth are one of them, we will cheer them all the way to the Championship. [LNB]'We don't want them to go bust, we want them to go into administration. It will be sad for their fans, but it will not destroy them.' [LNB] For the high jump: West Ham's Matthew Upson scores against Portsmouth in a 1-1 draw earlier this season (above) and Hammers' co-owner David Gold (below)[LNB]The south coast club face a winding-up petition from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs over an unpaid £11.7million tax bill, due on March 1. [LNB]And if they go bust all their results will be expunged, denying West Ham four vital points, a situation Gold is hoping to avoid. [LNB]'Nobody wants to see football clubs going bust because underneath we are all fans. I've got to be honest the four points is the driving motive but I also think we owe it to them. The Premier League is made up of 20 football clubs, not 19.[LNB] 'Each of us has an obligation, not to save them from their stupidity, but to make sure we save them from going bust. [LNB]'I want them to get relegated. I want them to go into administration, but I will be mortified if they go bust.' [LNB] Don't let Portsmouth sell outside transfer window!
