Hodgson praises Albion's resilience

Roy Hodgson believes it was a job well done at Wigan after Albion rescued a point.

Below-par Albion had Paul Scharner to thank for rescuing a point at his old club after Wigan outplayed the Baggies for long period.

Hodgson admits Wigan were the better team on an afternoon when Albion were backed by almost 5,000 travelling fans.

Wigan hit the crossbar twice in the first half before James McArthur opened the scoring nine minutes after the break.

Albion hit back through Scharner’s header in the 65th minute and were fortunate when the hosts again rattled the woodwork into injury time after Gareth McAuley’s deflection.

Baggies boss Hodgson expected his side to face a tough afternoon in Greater Manchester and was pleased to see his side get another point towards safety.

“Wigan played very well," he said.

"It was a very important game for them to win.

"They went about it in the right way and committed a lot of players forward.

"They hit the crossbar twice in the first half but I was more concerned with some of the crosses that were coming in. We had to work very hard to deal with them.

"They also pressurised us very quickly when we did get a chance to break out.

"Apart from a brief spell in the first half, I don't think we really utilised the fact they were leaving a lot of space behind them although, to be fair, we had quite a few free-kicks and corner-kicks in the first half, so we must've been getting up in their half of the field.

"But we weren't anywhere near our best in terms of our attacking play.

"We've got to be disappointed with our play when we did break out. On quite a few occasions, we had a lot of time and space to play but we didn't use it anywhere near as well as I've seen us use it in games.

"Having said that, I left a few players out to give others a chance to play.

"So I've got to be very satisfied with the point and sympathise with Wigan because, if any team was going to win this game, they would be the ones who deserved to.

"But the team I work with also deserve credit for their resilience, determination, character and desire to get something out of this game, despite the fact we're in a much more comfortable position in the league and could've been expected maybe on a day like today to crumble and succumb to the pressure.

"But we never did.

"We kept in it right to the end and got our reward. So it's a good point for us and obviously a disappointing one for Wigan who felt they could win the game."
