West Bromwich Albion 2 Reading 3: match report

24 February 2010 22:28
Brian McDermott is establishing quite a reputation in his first season in charge of his beloved Reading after Gylfi Sigurdsson inched the club into the quarter-finals for the first time in 83 years. [LNB]McDermott's incredible exploits in this competition continued on Wednesday night after Sigurdsson's excellent finish finally ensured West Bromwich Albion join Liverpool and Burnley in a healthy list of scalps. [LNB]Nobody will have been happier in the Reading dressing room than goalkeeper Adam Federici, however, after the Australian was saved from acute embarrassment after an appalling blunder gifted Albion the lead in normal time. [LNB]But Reading's fortune was in when Brian Howard levelled three minutes into added time, with the impressive Sigurdsson curling in an exquisite 95th-minute winner, to book a home tie with Martin O'Neill's Carling Cup finalists Aston Villa a week on Sunday. [LNB]It took only nine seconds for the first game in Berkshire to catch fire and it was a similarly frenetic opening at the Hawthorns. Robert Koren had angered Roberto Di Matteo in his last home outing after reacting indignantly to a late substitution but repaired the rift with the seventh minute opener. [LNB]Federici had repelled Roman Bednar's drive before Simon Cox's rebound was cleared off the line by Ryan Bertrand but Koren, finally, made no mistake from two yards out. [LNB]It was a short-lived lead, however, with Jimmy Kebe finding the net from close range after Scott Carson had kept out Sigurdsson's shot. [LNB]Reading had appeared more menacing for the remainder of the half but fell behind early in the second after Federici's error. [LNB]There appeared to be no danger when Koren turned outside the box and whipped in a low half volley but Federici let it slip through his fingers. [LNB]Incredibly, Reading almost levelled again soon after when Howard crashed a volley against the upright but he lashed in the equaliser in added time before Sigurdsson's stunning contribution.
