02 February 2011 07:59
[LNB]  Before last night, these sides hadmustered just two victories between them in their last 18 BarclaysPremier League matches. So something had to give at the Hawthorns, right? Wrong. [LNB]Neither team will be entirely satisfied with the outcome of an entertaining game. [LNB]Home boss Roberto di Matteo will befeeling more relieved after substitute Marc-Antoine Fortune stoppedAlbion's descent from turning into a free fall, but he bemoaned hisside's luck after the game. [LNB] Last gasp: Marc-Antoine Fortune is congratulated after scoring the equaliser[LNB]Di Matteo said: 'We hit the posttwice and the keeper made some great saves. We should have had apenalty as well. Again the decision didn't go for us.[LNB] 'It's just a shame they hit two quality goals from free-kicks. There's nothing we could do about that. But we're still not getting the big decisions.' [LNB]It was a night of 'if only' for both clubs.[LNB] Noses in front: Peter Odemwingie is mobbed after scoring for West Brom[LNB] If only, for instance, a square Wigan back line had not gifted Peter Odemwingie with his ninth goal of the campaign. [LNB]But on the other hand, if onlyCharles N'Zogbia's 20th-minute free-kick had not deflected off theoutstretched leg of Youssouf Mulumbu for the equaliser. Odemwingie had profited when the night's stand-outplayer, Jerome Thomas, threaded a ball behind Steve Gohouri. [LNB]The Albion striker slotted the ballfirst time beyond Ali Al Habsi with the outside of his right boot. ButWigan were far more comfortable thereafter and drew level in fortuitouscircumstances.[LNB] Mulumbu gave away the free-kick butit was his decision to stick out his right boot that was costly, deflecting N'Zogbia's set-piece past Boaz Myhill.[LNB]Wigan went in front shortly before the interval when Ben Watson curled the ensuing free-kick from the left flank and the ball evaded everyone to creep in at the far post. In the second half Wigan retreated. [LNB]But they still posed enough of a threat, with N'Zogbia seeing Myhill block his effort. Fortune and Chris Brunt hit the post but with 11 minutes left, the striker rose to meet Thomas's cross and his header scraped over the line. [LNB]That set the scene for a frantic final few moments with Al Habsi making a superb stop to deny Mulumbu a winning goal.[LNB] 'It was a good game for the neutral,' said Wigan boss Roberto Martinez at the final whistle, 'but it probably did neither team too many favours.'
