Table toppers delight Di Matteo

Boss praises players after maintaining winning run Roberto Di Matteo hailed his troops after their 2-0 victory against Scunthorpe United sent the Baggies back to the top of the Championship.  Goals in each half from Roman Bednar and Gianni Zuiverloon secured the points for a tired looking Albion.  The battling Baggies completed their ninth game of the year and recorded their fourth successive win following back-to-back away games against Blackpool and Plymouth inside three days.  Albion’s gruelling schedule of four games inside ten games has now yielded a maximum 12 points with Di Matteo having nothing but praise for his side. "We're very pleased with the last ten days," the Italian admitted. "We've played four games and managed to get away with the full points, which is excellent for us. "I don't think we expected it to be an easy game. "The expectation from the outside might have made it look like that. "Credit to Scunthorpe, they made it hard for us and they play good football as well. "They didn't quite hurt us but they made it hard. "The first goal was important for us. "To score an early goal settled us down a little bit and we were looking for the second goal. "It didn't quite come. "We had chances but we didn't quite manage to score. "Fortunately we got one towards the end, which killed the game off." Despite returning to the top of the table for the first time since late November, Di Matteo refused to get carried away with Albion’s lofty league position insisting only the table at the end of the season will matter. "The table is important at the end of the season, not now," he continued. "There is no reason to get carried away. "As I said a couple of weeks ago, it is probably going to be decided in the last couple of games. "I don't think anyone is going to pull away. "There are so many games to go and we have our own problems with the players we're missing and all the games coming up. "We've been playing so many games lately and we've got a full schedule. "It's tough and very demanding. "You could see tonight some of the players were at their limit. "They try to give you more but they can't because they don't have any fuel left."
