Defender backs move for Villa striker Nicky Shorey hopes his old Aston Villa teammate John Carew joins him at The Hawthorns. Carew was close to agreeing a loan deal until the end of the season yesterday, although the move fell through after Villa changed their mind. Shorey played alongside the giant Norwegian during his own time at Villa Park and has backed the club’s attempts add the former Valencia and Lyon hitman. “John on his day is tough to mark,” the defender says. “He is a really good player and a really nice bloke as well so he would fit in well. “Put it this way, I wouldn’t like to mark him. He is a really good lad and wherever he goes I am sure he will do well. “On his day no-one in the Premier League would want to mark him so that says it all really. “He can score goals with his head and his feet as he has proven over the years “He has had a few injuries but if he can go somewhere and get games I am sure he will get goals. “He is a laidback character but there is nothing wrong with that at times.”
