Hodgson puts Tchoyi and Cox on standby

Albion boss Roy Hodgson has laid down the gauntlet to Somen Tchoyi and Simon Cox to play their way into his starting XI.

The two strikers have the opportunity of an extended run of games due to Shane Long’s knee injury with Hodgson believing both have the ability to fill the Irishman’s boots.

Cameroon international Tchoyi started the season in the Baggies boss’ starting XI but has found opportunities difficult to come by since.

"The more chances he gets and the more he feels he's being supported and we're backing him, the better he will be," said Hodgson.

"When you play a bit-part like he did last year with odd games - if we don't count the last two or three games when he did very well - it's really hard to show your best.

"But certainly this year he has had a lot of starts already and he's looking at a start on Saturday all being well.

"These are the times when it's up to him to deal with that situation and deal with everyone's expectations of you.

"There is no doubt in my mind that he's got the ability, otherwise I wouldn't select him, so it's up to him now to make certain that ability shines through and he gives us a good game.

"On Saturday he went on in difficult circumstances and I think he acquitted himself very well and that's what he's got to keep doing.

"But he's got the experience, he's got the ability and the talent, so it's up to him now to make sure he gives performances.

"The players are judged on performances.

"This year, even more than last, the competition for places is quite strong and you've got to make certain when you get your chance that you play well and take it, otherwise there's going to be someone who may be in training and everyday is doing so well and crying out 'give me my chance because I'm ready'."

Former Swindon striker Cox has suffered a far more frustrating start to the season after failing to make start a league game this term. But the striker remains an important part of Albion’s squad with the head coach admitting the Republic of Ireland man has been unlucky to not get more first team action.

"He's been involved in every squad so far but with him, Odemwingie, Long and Tchoyi we have four strikers competing for two places, so he's not had much of a look in,” Roy added.

"But with Long out it brings him much closer and, furthermore, I must say his training has been very good.

"His desire and enthusiasm has also been there and, when he gets his chance, I'm sure he'll be ready to take it.”
