Professional Cox impresses boss

Hodgson full of admiration for patient striker

Roy Hodgson has praised the professionalism and patience of Republic of Ireland international striker Simon Cox.

The former Swindon Town man has been restricted to just 25 minutes of Premier League football after the arrival of fellow countryman Shane Long.

But Hodgson revealed that it has been business as usual for Cox despite his lack of first team football.

"I've admired Simon's patience - he's done very well for himself," he said.

"I was probably expecting Shane Long, who was picked in front of Kevin Doyle for Ireland's previous qualifiers before his injury, to start.

"But I'm sure Giovanni Trapattoni had a tactical reason for using Doyle and Cox together.

"It's very flattering for us to have Long and Cox, who got in on Tuesday because Robbie Keane was injured, featuring highly in Giovanni's plans.

"It was important for Simon to take that chance and I think his confidence has improved by being with Ireland and doing well.

"He did well for us at the end of last season - he played some good games.

"Simon works very hard in training and is a very serious professional.

"So, it's great he's been rewarded in this way.

"I'm delighted Ireland got the result they needed and it would be a fantastic achievement if they go on to qualify."
