McAuley joins from Ipswich

Northern Ireland captain pens three-year deal Albion have made their first signing ahead of next season’s campaign after Northern Ireland captain Gareth McAuley joined on a free transfer from Ipswich Town. The 31-year-old has signed a three-year-deal and will officially join the club on a Bosman transfer on July 1st. Baggies boss Roy Hodgson says he’s delighted to add a player of Gareth’s “quality and experience” to the Albion squad.   "We believe it is the right moment for Gareth to embark on a Barclays Premier League career after doing so well for so long in the Championship and for his national team,” said Hodgson. "We are also very happy that amid lots of competition for his services, we have managed to persuade him to join us." The Baggies fought off a number of clubs for McAuley’s signature after impressing for the Tractor Boys since signing from Leicester City in 2008. In total, the 6-foot, 3-inch defender has made 295 performances in England, including 12 as a substitute, scoring 25 times. How will McAuley fit into Roy Hodgson's plans?
