Striker to undergo injection before QPR game

Republic of Ireland international Shane Long is set for a pain-numbing injection in his groin ahead of tomorrow’s game against Queens Park Rangers.

The former Reading striker pulled the muscle in training after his return from a damaged knee cap but managed 72 minutes last weekend against Tottenham Hotspur.

Long is now hoping the injection allows him to complete the full 90 minutes against Rangers and insisted the injury is not a serious one.

“I’ve had a few niggles with my groin,” said the 24-year-old.

“In pushing myself from coming back from my knee injury I just tweaked my groin a little bit.

“It’s not too bad – I get an injection before the game, which can hopefully get me through the game on the other side without damaging it again.

“It’s only a small niggle and just needs time to heal.

“I had one last week and got through 70 minutes okay. I will probably have another one today.

“It’s something I can get through.

“It needs rest – I didn’t train all week until yesterday.

“The physios know what they’re doing and don’t want to make it a chronic injury so they’re happy for me to play on Saturday.

“The muscle tightens up to protect itself and the injection relaxes the muscle and keeps the pain away.

“Hopefully it will do the job for me and get through the 90 minutes.”
