Details of striker's transfer revealed in annual accounts

Shane Long has been revealed as Albion’s record signing after the club’s annual accounts showed the Baggies spent £6m on the former Reading man.

The Baggies initially reported that Long had joined for an undisclosed fee following his transfer back in August 2011.

But accounts ending July 2012 showed Albion broke the bank to sign the Republic of Ireland frontman.

The club’s official site still shows Borja Valero’s transfer from Real Mallorca back in August 2008 for £4.7 million.

The accounts revealed a drop in profits from £9.1m the year before to £1.5m, following the addition of a number of new players.

A tenth place finish under former manager Roy Hodgson helped the club achieve a record turnover of £66m. Around £50m came from media rights with a further £8m coming from gate receipts, £5.6m from commercial income and £2.6m from merchandise.

The record turnover also helped the club reduce its debt from £2m to around £500,000.
