Irvine surprised by Berahino arrest

West Brom boss Alan Irvine revealed he only discovered about Saido Berahino's arrest for alleged drink driving at the last minute.

The Baggies head coach was told the news by a club official hours before it broke - while he was watching Aston Villa on Monday.

Berahino, Albion's eight-goal top scorer and a recent England squad member, was stopped by police after allegedly being caught driving at high speed on the M6 in Cheshire last month.

When officers spoke to the 21-year-old striker, he was then arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

Berahino has been interviewed and bailed and is due to return to a Cheshire police station to speak again with officers in December, although a date has yet to be set.

He had not told Irvine, and the Scot admitted he was surprised by the news.

Irvine said: "I found out on Monday while I was at the Aston Villa game.

"The phone call was a shock, but then of course we don't know all the circumstances and the details of the investigation. Until then I can't actually make any kind of decision one way or another.

"I haven't spoken to him about the investigation because I don't think that's anything to do with me. I have spoken to him about the football side. He's trained really well this morning. The club are looking at everything that's going on."

The 21-year-old is available for selection, despite missing training with a tight hamstring on Tuesday, with the Baggies set to host Arsenal in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday.

He said: "Saido didn't train on Tuesday. He trained on Thursday and trained really well. I'm certainly perfectly happy with the way he went about things.

"I'm not necessarily feeling that he should have come to me, I don't really know exactly what the circumstances are and until the investigation is concluded I probably won't. I've just got to deal with the football side."
