West Brom boss Roy Hodgson has given his support to Bryan Robson as the former England captain battles throat cancer.

Robson, who started his career with Albion and spent seven years at the club before moving to Manchester United in 1981, underwent an operation to remove a tumour in Bangkok earlier this month. Specialists are optimistic about the 54-year-old Thailand coach's chances of recovery and Hodgson said everyone at the Hawthorns was behind him.

Hodgson said: "I've always regarded Bryan as a friend and a person whom I respect enormously not only as a player but for the good job he's done as a manager and now as ambassador for Manchester United."

He added: "I was very, very saddened to hear about the problem he's got. I just hope that it's something that is operable and can be sorted out and has been found in good enough time, because these days luckily the treatment is so much better.

"Whenever you hear the word cancer it sends a shiver down your spine, so certainly Bryan I think knows that everyone here at West Bromwich Albion is rooting for him, pulling for him.

"Like everyone else in football all I can do is wish him a good operation and a speedy recovery."
