Roy Hodgson has revealed West Brom went "into overdrive" when they discovered striker Shane Long had a heart problem.

The 25-year-old was reportedly diagnosed with pericarditis, an inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart, brought on by an infection.

Hodgson was quoted by the Daily Mirror as saying: "Anytime anything affects the heart region it's a concern of course, we don't take any injury or sickness lightly."

He added: "But whenever the heart is mentioned, you suddenly go into overdrive.

"We did all the tests. Quite extensive tests to be 100 per cent sure.

"It's important to check those things out because a heart injury is not like having a sore ankle or knee. But it was a virus which unfortunately settled in that area.

"In the end, there was never any question that his heart was in any way other than perfect shape."
