Gardner targets more cup success

West Brom midfielder Craig Gardner is eyeing more League Cup glory - but is wary of goal-crazy Bournemouth.

Gardner won the trophy with Birmingham in 2011 before Blues were relegated later that term.

He also played in last season's final for Sunderland as the Black Cats were beaten 3-1 by Manchester City.

On Tuesday the Baggies go to Bournemouth in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup, with memories of victory still fresh for Gardner.

The 27-year-old - along with current Albion team-mate Ben Foster - was in the Birmingham side who shocked Arsenal 2-1 at Wembley under Alex McLeish three years ago.

Goals from Nikola Zigic and Obafemi Martins won it and Gardner wants to taste that success again.

"It is a dream come true, lifting the cup," he said.

"How many players can say they have got medals in their career? Not many. It is a great experience.

"I don't need to tell the lads that - they will know.

"It was one of the highs, but getting relegated was one of the lows.

"I am sure that we won't do that next year.

"West Brom are a well-established Premier League team, which is why I have come here, and always wanted to come here for the last three years.

"We are going to have a great season. We have the players, the staff and the passion, so why not?"

Head coach Alan Irvine is likely to make changes from Saturday's 2-2 Barclays Premier League draw with Crystal Palace.

But Gardner insists whatever team the Baggies field, they want to win the cup.

"It is a great competition to be involved in," he said.

"You get on a good run it gives you momentum and confidence and self-belief - as I know, having won it and come runners-up - so we want to go there and win the game.

"I think some clubs dismiss the competition because maybe they have a big squad and it is a chance to give other players a game.

"But they dismiss it until it gets serious. When it gets serious they want to win it as it is a cup.

"We have a great squad of players and whatever team plays it is a strong first team."

Bournemouth hammered Gardner's old club 8-0 at St Andrew's on Saturday and go into the game as slight favourites with the bookmakers.

They have won six of their last seven games in all competitions to rise to fourth in the Sky Bet Championship.

Their hammering of Birmingham was Bournemouth's record Football League win and Gardner knows the south-coast side are a major threat.

"Bournemouth have got a good result against Birmingham," he said. "We don't take anyone for granted.

"They have a great manager who likes to play football. In the Championship a lot of managers get their sides to hoof it but they like to play and so do we.

"I can see it being a good game and it is a massive game for both clubs as the winner goes into the quarter-finals."
