Gardner heaps praise on Berahino

Craig Gardner insists West Brom star Saido Berahino has out-gunned Manchester United's multi-million pound strikeforce.

England Under-21 international Berahino scored in the Baggies' 2-2 draw with United on Monday as Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao struggled.

It was the 21-year-old's seventh goal of the season and he has scored six in the Barclays Premier League to be the division's top English scorer.

Berahino's display against United added weight to growing calls for a senior England call up.

Van Persie has netted twice for United this season while Monaco loanee Falcao - who started on the bench against the Baggies - has netted once in five games.

And Gardner said Berahino outshone Louis Van Gaal's strike duo, who have cost a combined £117million over their careers, on Monday.

He said: "Yeah, I think so and he scored. Strikers are there to score goals and he scored and they didn't.

"He's been brilliant. When he went through I just thought '2-1'. I was never in doubt because I see him day in day out. If he keeps his feet on the floor he'll make a good career.

"His all round game since I've been here has improved so much, he can free people up around him, he can hold the ball up, get in behind and he has a natural goalscoring instinct where he can get in positions where you see people like Falcao and Rooney. His record speaks for itself."

Berahino also netted in their 3-2 Capital One Cup win over Hull and has shouldered the goalscoring burden for the Baggies.

Albion have six players on one goal - including record £10million summer buy Brown Ideye - but Gardner believes it does not matter who scores.

"There's no 'I' in team. We are helping him. We are putting the chances on a plate for him. If it's not Saido it could be someone else," said the midfielder.

"As long as the team keeps scoring it doesn't matter who is. Saido won't get too big for his boots because we won't let him."
