Coach hails unsung hero

New Albion Assistant Manager Keith Downing has dismissed any criticism of captain Chris Brunt insisting the skipper is an unsung hero.

The Northern Ireland international has failed to rediscover the form of last season with questions raised over his place in the side from certain quarters.

But Downing insists Brunt has a valuable role to play in Roy Hodgson’s side and highlighted his excellent work and team ethic.

"I think Chris is a team player, I really do,” the No.2 said. "Without the ball, he works exceptionally hard.

"He also works exceptionally hard every day in training

"If he is judged to say he is not on his game, his work and his effort will certainly get him through a period where he is not so effective.

"You can look at Chris and say 'he's not a flying winger', but he plays an important role for what the head coach wants.

"Sometimes, that might not be as pleasing to the public as somebody who, say, goes past a player.

"But he's not in the team to do that.

"He's in the team to carry out other functions and I think he goes about his work diligently.

"He's an ultimate pro.

"But he's also a creative player.

"He has a great left foot and at the moment he's just missing that thing that can unlock a door.

"But he certainly has the ability to do that at any time during a game.”

Downing added: "He also has great set-piece delivery.

"We have no worries about Chris.

"He is an honest guy that realises his standards and will work hard to try and improve them."
