Di Matteo pleased with United comeback
But boss wants Albion to stop conceding first Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo again praised his players’ resilience after coming from two goals down to draw at Old Trafford. Albion were steamrollered in the first half by a rampant Manchester United. However, the Baggies were a different team after the break and extended their six-game unbeaten run thanks to an own goal and Somen Tchoyi’s first goal for the club. Roberto Di Matteo’s men fell behind after only five minute when Scott Carson failed to hold a free-kick and Javier Hernandez slotted home. The visitors fell further behind when Nani capitalised after Nicky Shorey slipped. But after the break Albion again showed why they are the division’s comeback kings. Five minutes after the break, Chris Brunt’s low free kick was deflected into the United goal by Patrice Evra. Albion benefited from another defensive error minutes later when Somen Tchoyi tapped home after Edwin Van Der Sar’s slip. "I think it is the correct result after the way the game went," beamed Di Matteo. "United had some chances and if they had scored a third goal, the game would probably have been over. "It was an afternoon of gifts for both sides, let's put it that way. "I keep telling the players we shouldn't make it a habit of coming back from 1-0 down or 2-0 down. "We need to stop conceding the first goal. "But the reaction of my players to being 2-0 down was tremendous. "That showed a good team spirit and the kind of personalities we have in the team. "We never give up - and that's our philosophy." The former Italian international added: "I wasn't angry about the first half. "You expect United to put you under pressure and create some chances. "I was disappointed with the goals we gave away but I wasn't that unhappy at half-time because I didn't think we were that bad in the first half at all. "We just thought if we could get one back in the second-half , 'who knows?'" The point against the Red Devils saw the Baggies finish the game still in sixth spot in the table and extended their unbeaten league run to five games. And, once again, Di Matteo praised his players for refusing to throw in the towel. "If you look at the United team sheet, you think 'uh oh'!" he quipped. "But our game is to attack. "We always go onto the pitch to try and win the match. "We are not a negative team. "We are a very positive team and we try to create chances and win games. "If the opposition is stronger or better than us on the day, you hold your hands up. "We could have gone under at 2-0 - but we didn't. "And if we remove the kind of mistakes that led to those goals, we'll have a better chance. "But everyone makes mistakes, as we've seen this afternoon."
