Scharner hopes to end Vile curse Paul Scharner is hoping Albion can continue ripping up the records books this Saturday at Villa Park (KO 3pm). The Baggies have already beaten Arsenal away from The Hawthorns for the first time in 27 years, beaten Everton at Goodison for the first time in three decades and ended a 26-year wait for a league victory over Newcastle this term. The Austrian international now believes Albion’s can win on Witton soil for the first time in 25 years. "We did it against Arsenal, Newcastle, Everton and so on, and there is a high potential this season to break this one as well,” he said. "But it is a very difficult game and it's a derby game. "It is very different to other games but we have good confidence from the last two games and there is a high chance to win the game." The former Wigan man is no stranger to derby games after featuring in the Vienna fixture between Rapid and Austria during his time in his homeland. "I played for Austria Vienna and we played Rapid Vienna four times in a year, and they were massive games," he continued. "The atmosphere is very hot because Vienna is the biggest city in Austria and Rapid Vienna were the bigger club. "With Austria Vienna we were chasing after them and it was always a very tough game. "But the standing in the table doesn't count on the day. "It is a special day and it is the performance on the day that counts. "The fans this season are quite happy with us because for most of the time we have been the best club in the West Midlands. "We are there at the moment and hopefully we can keep it as long as possible. "That means that the next two games are very vital, and if we can get the points we need and we are focused, things would look good."Four weeks ago I was with The Albion Foundation and they told me that for the older generation of Baggies fans Villa is the biggest game and Wolves is more for the younger generation. "Derby games are different to normal games because there is more in them - but we have to keep our focus on getting the result."
