Striker ends three year spell

Simon Cox has signed for Nottingham Forest for an undisclosed fee.

The former Swindon striker has signed a three-year contract at the City Ground – just months after extending his contract at The Hawthorns.

Cox signed for Albion days before the appointment of Roberto Di Matteo. He failed to consistently hold down a first team place at The Hawthorns and was forced to play an attacking midfielder role towards the end of his Albion career.

He has fallen further down the pecking order at The Hawthorns this summer after the arrival of Markus Rosenberg and loan signing Romelu Lukaku.

“I would like to place on record my thanks to Coxy for his great service to the club,” said Dan Ashworth.

“He has a fantastic attitude which I think is best summed up by the fact he did not miss a single game through illness or injury.

“Coxy scored plenty of vital goals during our promotion-winning season in 2009/10.

“He also made a major contribution to the club retaining our Premier League status during the second half of the following season, including his memorable goal at Tottenham, which helped him break into the Republic of Ireland team.

“With Shane arriving last summer, Peter continuing to score and Marco also doing well, it became tougher for Coxy to get game time last season and we’ve now brought in Markus and Romelu.

“We’ve had lots of interest in him this summer and this is a good move for him and his career.

“He joins Nottingham Forest with our best wishes.”

In total, Cox made 46 starts for the Baggies, plus a further 33 appearances from the bench. He scored 18 goals.
