Boss pleased with Wigan win

Steve Clarke was pleased to see Albion finally get three points away from The Hawthorns after goals from James Morrison and a Steve Caldwell own goal earned a deserved 2-1 victory against Wigan Athletic.

Clarke masterminded the victory after swapping from Albion’s standard 4-2-3-1 formation to a more conventional 4-4-2 shape to combat Wigan’s attacking threats.

It was the recalled Morrison who headed in Chris Brunt’s excellent cross before Billy Jones forced Caldwell to deflect the ball past his own keeper.

Albion conceded only their 12th goal of the season when Aroune Kone poked home from close range. But Boaz Myhill – starting his first league game of the season – marshalled his troops to hold on to the points.

“We’ve had a bad habit recently of losing late goals and dropping points and it was nice to hang on and get the 2-1 win,” said Clarke.     “The away win is long overdue.  “I think the away performances have been as good as the home performances.  “But it’s nice to finally get a win away from home.  “It’s not a monkey off our backs but it is something people will always cast up to you if you don’t end it sooner rather than later.  “So, it’s nice to do that, especially at such a difficult place, because Wigan are a good team in a good moment and I think it is a really good three points.”
