Boss wants to hoard points

Italian looks ahead of harsh winter Roberto Di Matteo hopes to have as many points in the bag as possible before the busy winter period kicks in. The former MK Dons chief likened Albion’s bid for points to that of a farmer collecting hay over the winter. Albion are currently the best placed team in the Midlands after an impressive start which has generated 12 points from eight games. The Baggies face Fulham at The Hawthorns on Saturday (KO 3pm) with the Italian hoping to improve on his points haul. "It's like when you're a farmer," he quipped. "You want to bring as much hay into your store as soon as possible. "It's going to be a long, harsh winter. "It is freezing cold at the moment. "We're happy we've got some hay in there already. "But we definitely don't have enough. "After eight games there are still 90 points to play for, so we have nowhere near enough. "My family went to visit a farm so it's in my mind at the moment!" After seeing his side concede six on the opening day of the season against Chelsea, Di Matteo has been delighted with the response of his players’ awareness at the back. "We have improved defensively," he said. "We look more solid. "At the end of this season we'll be able to answer the question properly. "We are still conceding a few too many goals in my view. "But we'll work on it and hopefully we can improve that. "Scott is probably frustrated because we've only had one clean-sheet but if we win 3-1 then I don't care. "It would be churlish to complain if we do that but obviously you have a better chance to win if you don't concede."
