Blackburn v West Bromwich Albion LIVE: All the news as it happens from Ewood Park

23 January 2011 18:14
18.00: And as afternoon turns to evening on this winter's day, that is where we are going to leave our coverage. It almost goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that we will have a report and reaction to the game on this very website. Do enjoy what remains of the weekend, and thank you for your company. Good evening.[LNB]17.55: Not the worst game I've seen by any means, and although Blackburn were worthy winners, the Baggies had their moments too. It's not going too badly for new Rovers boss Steve Kean, is it?[LNB]17.51: FULL-TIME: BLACKBURN 2 WEST BROMWICH ALBION 0[LNB]So there we have it. A deserved 2-0 win for Rovers at Ewood Park, courtesy of a Tamas own goal and stunning strike from Hoilett. Blackburn move up five places to seventh in the table, while West Brom stay in 15th.[LNB]17.49: Santa Cruz wastes a late chance to crown his return with a goal. He looks offside as it happens, but curls the ball wide from the edge of the area. [LNB]17.47: An almighty scramble in the West Brom area, which could easily result in a goal but Roberts blasts over the bar.[LNB]17.44: An improvement on that earlier stat for you. Roman Bednar's arrival means there have now been 22 nationalities involved in this game. It's a new record folks. Actually it's pretty amazing when you sit down and think about it (and I am sitting down and thinking about it), particularly if you grew up watching football in the 1970s or 1980s.[LNB]17.43: We're nearly finished in this one. Inside the final five minutes, no less.[LNB]17.40: Tamas deflects a Hoilett effort behind for a corner. This is cleared away, but Blackburn will settle for two goals.[LNB]17.37: Grant Hanley comes on for Salgado. Arguably one of the more unlikely substitutions. Bednar is on too, for Morrison.[LNB]17.36: Youmay be interested in this fellow stattos: The appearance of JasonRoberts makes Grenada the 21st nationality involved in the match. Thisequals the record set in a match between Blackburn and Chelsea in 2009.[LNB] Rovers Return: Roque Santa Cruz (right) protects the ball under pressure from West Brom's Paul Scharner[LNB]17.34: Well done lads, it looks like three more points!Gary, Burnley[LNB]17.32: This one is in danger of petering out. It's gone rather quiet again, and the result seems to be in little doubt.[LNB]17.27: Jermaine Jones upends Odemwingie on the very edge of the penalty area - indeed, it looks suspiciously like the challenge was fractionally inside the area. Referee Mark Clattenburg disagrees and awards a free-kick. Brunt's effort is weak and strikes the wall. West Brom's last big chance may have gone there.[LNB]17.25: Thomas bursts through into the Rovers are, but Robinson makes himself big and blocks his low shot on goal. Blackburn have been the better side in this game, but the Rovers keeper has still done mighty well.[LNB]17.21: Steven Nzonzi comes on to replace Dunn for Rovers, and Kalinic makes way for Jason Roberts.[LNB]17.17: We have played an hour in this match at Ewood Park. Well, I say 'we' - I've just been sitting here with coffee in hand typing away. I should say Blackburn and West Brom have played an hour in this match. Either way, welcome if you've just joined us from a day out at the shops, the pub, or indeed if you've just been slumped on the sofa watching a glorious Sunday afternoon film from yesteryear. Rovers are 2-0 up here and heading for the points.[LNB]17.16: Youssouf Mulumbu is taken off for the visitors, and replaced by Somen Tchoyi.[LNB]17.15: A Blackburn corner finds Salgado on the edge of the area, and his dipping volley is palmed away by Myhill.[LNB]17.12: Simply superb save from Robinson, with a stinging low shot from Thomas heading for the low corner but the goalkeeper's fingernails preventing the visitors pulling a goal back.[LNB]17.08: The Baggies will have to pull something unlikely out of the bag to win anything from this game. Rovers look like they're heading up to seventh place in the Premier League.[LNB]17.04: GOAL! BLACKBURN 2 WEST BROMWICH ALBION 0[LNB]A second goal for Blackburn, and what a goal. David Hoilett turns past Tamas and fires a marvellous dipping swerving shot into the roof of the net.[LNB] What a strike: Hoilett fires home Blackburn's second goal at Ewood Park[LNB]17.02: We're back under way in this one. Calm down out there.[LNB]16.47: Half-time Blackburn 1 West Brom 0[LNB]16.44: Blackburn are buoyed by the goal, and a rasping effort from Santa Cruz requires Myhill to be alert to make a save.[LNB]16.41: GOAL! BLACKBURN 1 WEST BROMWICH ALBION 0[LNB]Enlarge What have you gone and done, Gabriel? Tamas heads into his own net[LNB]The deadlock is broken at Ewood Park, and it's a ghastly moment for Gabriel Tamas. He heads a cross from Dunn beyond a despairing Byhill and into the top corner of his own net.[LNB]16.38: The Baggies have obviously grown a little tired of this good period of play for the hosts, and an effort from Thomas deflects off Samba and flies just wide of the near post and into the side netting.[LNB]16.35: Samba fires a shot on goal that flies only inches wide, following a clever lay-off from Santa Cruz.[LNB]16.33: There is no doubt who the better team is right at the moment. Blackburn are threatening again as  Roque Santa Cruz finds space on the edge of the West Brom and turns over a low cross, which is cleared away.[LNB]16.29: Good from Boaz Myhill. He first makes a fine low save as a Martin Olsson shot snakesthrough a crowd of players, and then less than a minute later he reactswell to turn away a stinging drive from Chris Samba. [LNB]16.27: Blackburn are enjoying much more possession right at the moment. The hosts will want to strike while the iron's hot.[LNB]16.24: Notthe prettiest of challenges on Dunn by Scharner, and Blackburn aregiven a free-kick on the edge of the West Brom area. Morten GamstPedersen slams the free-kick against the wall though.[LNB] Enlarge Battle: Paul Scharner and Blackburn Rovers' David Dunn clash at Ewood Park[LNB] [LNB]16.20: Some nice skills from Thomas on the edge of the Blackburn area, but his cross is rather weak and cleared away.[LNB]16.19: Come on you Baggies! Thanks for the updates.Gary, Birmingham[LNB]16.18: It's a bit of a midfield battle out there right now, with both teams trying to establish some kind of domination in the match.[LNB]16.14: West Brom go close, with Paul Scharner nipping in before Robinson on the near post. The ball finds Jerome Thomas, and his deflected effort squirms just wide of the post.[LNB]16.10: Olsson clears the ball behind and Blackburn win a corner. It isn't the best delivery to the near post, but the defence clear behind for another corner. The second corner is cleared as far as Dunn, who blasts a shot that is blocked on the edge of the area.[LNB] Battle: West Brom's Jonas Olsson challenges Blackburn's David Hoilett[LNB]16.08: Honesty will always be the only policy from me, folks. This isn't the best atmosphere I've ever heard. OK, so I wasn't expecting thousands of little pieces of paper a la Buenos Aires in the 1978 World Cup final, but I can almost hear individual conversations in the crowd. 'How's you, Stan - good weekend?' etc.[LNB]16.05: Nikola Kalinic wakes the home crowd up, having time and space to run in the West Brom half. He is crowded out, but it was the most promising passage of play thus far for Rovers.[LNB]16.03: Chris Brunt's free-kick is blocked by the wall. Blackburn have hardly had a kick yet.[LNB]16.02: This is a really promising start for West Brom. James Morrison is surrounded by Blackburn players, but wins a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area.[LNB]16.00: We're under way. And within the first minute, we have a chance. Peter Odemwingie bursts through on goal for the visitors, and fires in a shot which is well saved by Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson.[LNB]15.57: The teams are making their way out at Ewood Park, wouldn't you know it? We'll be under way shortly with this one.[LNB]15.50: Both teams could rise a few places with victory, with the incentive arguably greater for the hosts. Blackburn could move up from 12th to seventh with a win here.[LNB]15.48: To say this has been a turbulent couple of months for Blackburn would be an understatement. There must be more than a few people wondering why Sam Allardyce is talking about the match from a television studio today, and not advising Rovers from the touchline. [LNB]15.45: Time just isn't standing still for any of us, is it? Christmas came and went in a whirl, and January is already coming to an end. It won't be long before we're waving goodbye to that old rascal winter (this is for those in Blighty of course, I realise that people could be reading this from all corners of the world, where it might indeed be summer).[LNB]15.35: For some reason, the powers that be (I mean television of course) have decreed that this is the only game to be played in the top flight this Sabbath. Let's hope it's a good one then, yes.[LNB]15.32: First things first. Here are the teams:[LNB]Blackburn: Robinson, Salgado, Samba, Givet, Olsson, Dunn, Jermaine Jones, Pedersen, Hoilett, Kalinic, Santa Cruz. Subs: Bunn, El-Hadji Diouf, Nzonzi, Mwaruwari, Roberts, Hanley, Mame Diouf.[LNB]West Brom: Myhill, Jara, Tamas, Olsson, Cech, Brunt, Mulumbu, Thomas, Scharner, Morrison, Odemwingie.Subs: Carson, Tchoyi, Pablo, Bednar, Shorey, Zuiverloon, Cox.[LNB]Referee: Mark Clattenburg (Tyne & Wear)[LNB]15.30: Good day.
