Big Ron backs Big Sam

Allardyce the right man for Atkinson Ron Atkinson believes that Sam Allardyce is the right man to take over from Roberto Di Matteo. The Italian was placed on gardening leave yesterday after losing 13 out of 18 games in all competitions. Allardyce is himself out of work after being dismissed from Blackburn Rovers earlier in the season. But Atkinson has backed the former Bolton Wanderers chief to keep Albion in the division if appointed. “If I were the chairman, that would be my first thought,” said Atkinson. “Go to Big Sam and ask him to come in until the end of the season to keep the team up – they can review things after that. “But the immediate aim is survival. They need someone with the drive, the experience and the know-how in situations like this and Sam ticks those boxes. “He’s been at the club before and knows what it’s all about.”
