Ashworth backs Di Matteo axe

Sporting and Technical Director says survival is key Dan Ashworth says the decision to remove Roberto Di Matteo was needed for Albion to survive relegation. The Baggies currently lie 16th in the Premier League, two points above the relegation zone – but have now lost 13 out of the last 18 games in all competitions. Ashworth says survival is of “paramount importance” and with the right appointment, “we can still achieve our goal”. First-team coach and former Albion midfielder Michael Appleton has now been placed in temporary charge. The Sporting and Technical Director backed Appleton’s appointment and says he has all of the credentials to help the Baggies during the relegation dogfight. "In the meantime, First-Team affairs are in the very capable hands of Michael Appleton,” he said. "He has gained all the coaching badges available, including the UEFA Pro Licence, and knows the Club inside out. "Most importantly, he has earned the full respect of the players and everyone else at the Football Club. "I have worked closely with Roberto since June 2009 and I would like to thank him, Eddie and Ade for all their hard work during this period and wish them well for the future."
