Assistant wanted over vacant Pompey hotseat

Michael Appleton looks set to leave The Hawthorns and take the vacant manager’s positions at Portsmouth.

Discussions are ongoing between the clubs for a compensation package for the 35-year-old after he expressed his wish to talk to the South coast club about the role.

Albion boss Roy Hodgson admits he won’t stand in the way of Appleton leaving the club and backed the former Albion midfielder to be a future hit.

"He is ready for a top job and when he gets it I think he will make a big success of it," he said.

"Michael is an excellent young coach and we at West Brom have to accept there are clubs out there who know their business and will target him.

"There are some discussions still to be had, but if it works out that Portsmouth do want him and he wants to go then all we can do is bemoan the fact it is a great loss for us and congratulate Portsmouth on appointing an excellent manager."
