Werder snare striker Wagner

Werder Bremen have snapped up forward Sandro Wagner from German second division side Duisburg.

The former Germany Under-21 international has agreed a three-and-a-half year deal at the Weserstadion after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee.

Werder were on the lookout for a new striker after agreeing to terminate the loan deal of Shakhtar Donetsk frontman Marcelo Martins so that he could join up with Wigan Athletic.

"We have intensively observed Sandro for a number of months and we are happy that we had the chance to bring him into the team," explained general manager Klaus Allofs.

"We are continuing our philosophy of giving young players the opportunity to continue their development at the highest level."
