Werder Bremen beat relegation-threatened Energie Cottbus 2-0 on Saturday to move two points clear of third-placed Schalke who could only draw 1-1 with Hannover.
Second-half goals by Markus Rosenberg and Hugo Almeida helped Werder secure their 17th victory of the season.
Meanwhile in Gelsenkirchen, Arnold Bruggink's free-kick gave Hannover an eighth-minute lead but Halil Altintop's effort ensured the spoils were shared.
Fourth-placed Hamburg are four points behind Schalke after winning 3-1 at Hansa Rostock. Ivica Olic scored a brace for Hamburg while Rafael van der Vaart scored their other goal.
Last season's champions Stuttgart eased to a 4-1 victory at home to Eintracht Frankfurt to move up to fifth in the Bundesliga table. The result was never in doubt after they scored three times in the opening 18 minutes.
Arminia Bielefeld eased their relegation concerns by beating Bochum 2-0 while Hertha Berlin won the mid-table clash against Karlsruhe 3-1.
