Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf hailed the resilience of his side after they shrugged off European disappointment to win the German Cup.

Midfielder Mesut Ozil's second-half goal was decisive as the beaten UEFA Cup finalists overcame Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 in Saturday's domestic showpiece in Berlin.

"We showed will and we showed commitment," hailed Schaaf.

"Playing like that in the 55th competitive match this season is something."

Midfielder Torsten Frings added: "We were under great pressure following the UEFA Cup final defeat.

"But we played a great game, we won and qualified for Europe next season."
