New Werder deal for Schaaf

Werder Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf has signed a new deal that will extend his stay at the club until the summer of 2012.

He has guided them to fourth place in the Bundesliga table this term and they sit four points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

They also cruised through their Europa League group and into the next stage of the competition in emphatic fashion, and Schaaf, who spent his entire playing career with the team, has been rewarded.

Sporting director Klaus Allofs said on the club's official website: "This shows the high standing Thomas has with us.

"He has proved over many years that he has the skills to improve a team and its players. This has been an important factor in our success."

Schaaf was understandably delighted to have settled his immediate future and, after putting pen-to-paper, said: "Werder continue to have an interesting team capable of pursuing new goals.

"That's why it was not difficult to accept this new challenge."
