Boenisch plays waiting game

Werder Bremen defender Sebastian Boenisch has opted to wait before deciding which country to pledge his international future to.

The 22-year-old is eligible to play for either Germany or Poland, but has turned down a call-up from the latter land his birth for the time being.

Werder chairman Klaus Allofs commented: "We have known of the interest from the Polish Federation for some time and know that Sebastian feels very honoured.

"Due to his heritage, a switch would be an option. But we agreed that this important decision should not be made under time pressure.

"The next goal for Poland is the European Championship in their own country in three years. Until then they will only be playing friendly matches.

"That gives Sebastian the chance to take in all the possibilities and calmly make a decision."
