Boenisch knee blow for Werder

Werder Bremen defender Sebastian Boenisch has been ruled out until the new year with a knee injury.

The left-back took a blow to the knee during Saturday's 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Schalke.

He will now miss Werder's final Europa League group stage game against Athletic Bilbao in midweek before sitting out next weekend's Bundesliga derby with Hamburg.

"Sebastian will travel to Regensburg where he will be examined by knee specialist Dr Eichhorn," explained team doctor Gotz Dimanski.

"On Tuesday he will undergo an operation performed by Dr Eichhorn."

Concerned Werder coach Thomas Schaaf added: "At the moment we have to just wait and see how the operation goes and then assess the damage.

"I hope that it's not too bad and that Sebastian can make a full recovery early in the new year. We wish him all the best."
