DR Congo midfielder Cedrick Makiadi on Friday became Werder Bremen's first new signing for next season having signed a three-year deal to join the north German club from Bundesliga rivals Freiburg.

"He is a very interesting, very solid player, who can play in several positions," said Bremen's sports director Thomas Eichin about Makiadi who has made 17 appearances for the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

"He has developed well at Freiburg and has the maturity which we need."

Makiadi is the fifth player to leave after Freiburg just missed out on a Champions League place next season when they lost 2-1 to Schalke on the last day of the Bundesliga season.

"Cedrick is a strong attacking player with good defensive qualities, along with his Bundesliga experience, he will do our team some good," said Bremen's new coach Robin Dutt.

Makiadi has played in the German league since 2004, making 177 Bundesliga appearances and he played in 29 of Freiburg's 34 games last season, scoring three goals, and regularly captained the side as a defensive midfielder.
