Troy Deeney named Championship PFA Fans' Player of the Month for April

Watford may have been denied the Championship title in the last few minutes of a dramatic season, but there has been plenty to celebrate for Troy Deeney and his colleagues.

An open top bus parade around the packed streets of the town capped a memorable year; not least for the Hornets skipper and leading scorer.

Deeney contributed 21 goals and now has cause for a further celebration after being named the Championship Fans’ Player of the Month for April.

It is a much-deserved award for a player who has grown in stature as the season has gone on, embracing the role of captain and talisman of a team now preparing for life in the Premier League.

Deeney’s strike partnership with Matej Vydra was key to Watford’s success, and their link-up with Odion Ighalo garnered no fewer than 57 goals.

Vicarage Road favourite Troy wasn't too downhearted after a late Sheffield Wednesday goal at the weekend robbed the Hornets of the Championship crown.

A little frustrated perhaps, but no less proud of the efforts of his teammates and indeed his own part in one of the club’s greatest successes.

As he looks forward to pitting his wits and skills against the Premier League big guns, he says: “I am massively proud to be captain of this special group of players.

“I don't feel there is extra responsibility on me as skipper; I've always thought of myself as a leader anyway. If anything, I think it has made me a better player.

“As long as the team gets the job done and wins games, I don't mind who scores. But I'm pretty chuffed to end the season with the most goals – and most assists!”
