Owls boss targets three more wins

The Owls moved four points clear of the drop zone after a late win at Vicarage Road, which moves them above the Hornets in the table.[LNB]Luke Varney was the matchwinner for Wednesday as his 89th-minute strike decided a game that seemed destined for a draw.[LNB]Eddie Nolan's first career goal put the Owls ahead 11 minutes after the break, but Watford hit back and levelled 10 minutes later through Tom Cleverley's delicious curling free-kick.[LNB]It was just Wednesday's second win in their last nine games and Irvine is adamant that the Owls need three more victories from their remaining seven games to be sure of safety.[LNB]"I'm still going for three wins," said Irvine. "Until we get them I won't relax. We have an awful lot to do still.[LNB]"It's a high pressure situation. Crystal Palace are below us but have a game in hand and have a superior goal difference, so that's another point.[LNB]"I am scared to death, it is really hard winning games in the Championship. It sounds better three from seven, but it is still very close. Too close for comfort.[LNB]"I'll be really surprised if there are not major issues to be resolved on the last day of the season."[LNB]For the most part it was a dire encounter at Hillsborough, particularly in the first period and Irvine was pleased with how his side responded after the break.[LNB]"It was absolute torture, we didn't play well enough in the first half," he added. [LNB]"Credit to the players, we were better in the second half. It looked as if we turned a victory into a draw but luckily we got the winning goal."[LNB]Watford boss Malky Mackay was furious with referee Darren Deadman after he missed what the Hornets boss felt was a clear foul on Cleverley in the build up to Wednesday's winner.[LNB]Cleverley was down on the ground after a challenge from Darren Potter but Mr Deadman allowed play to continue and Varney went on to score.[LNB]"You see the reaction of the players. I can't believe it," said a fuming Mackay.[LNB]"When I get an apology from the referee saying 'I am sorry I missed it', it is unacceptable. I have seen it on the DVD and it is blatant. For the referee not to give that is unacceptable."[LNB]Despite the defeat, which leaves his side teetering above the drop zone and with just one win in their last eight games, Mackay is confident his side will achieve safety.[LNB]"I know we are down there with seven or eight teams and we have to make sure we pick up as many points as we can.[LNB]"We're definitely confident we can stay in the division."[LNB][LNB]
