Ouch, that Hertz! Chaos on Watford's Spanish tour as hire cars break down

Pre-season tours are often seen as an excuse to top up pampered players' sun tans and wring a few pennies out of some unsuspecting locals. But spare a thought for Watford, whose recent trip to Spain was a rather different story. As the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham were jetting off forglamourous pre-season tours of America and the Far East, lapping up thefans' adoration in five-star surroundings, Hornets boss Malky Mackay's plans were plunged into chaos. First, British Airways forgot to load the club's kit bag onto their flight out of Heathrow, leaving the players scrambling desperately to find shirts and shorts to wear for their friendly against local side CFBalaguer. The sojourn in Spain should have been all Sangria and bleep tests (not necessarily in that order) but sadly ended up resembling the sequence in 'Clockwise', the film where an increasingly irate John Cleese uses any means possible to reach his headmasters' conference. The tourists suffered further calamity in renting a van for the week. The first two vehicles broke down and the club were duly hit with a £5,000 bill from hire company Hertz for repatriating them.
