Mahon issues promotion threat

Thursday Feb 09 2006 15:56

Watford skipper Gavin Mahon says the emphatic 4-1 victory over Sheffield United on Monday proves they are serious contenders to win automatic promotion.

The Hornets have been pushing for the top flight all season but have gone about their business in a quiet fashion as all the pundits have concentrated on Reading and the Blades.

Watford have maintained their push just behind the top two and Mahon says the victory at Bramall Lane this week has fired a warning to their rivals.

He said: "It's a great result for us - this was a chance for us to show that we're capable of pushing for promotion and we showed that.

"A lot of other managers would have been watching the game and they'll know we've got a decent side.

"When you go (to Bramall Lane) you know they are going to try and intimidate and bully you but we stood up for ourselves and we were all leaders out there."
