The former Sunderland man has been the subject of interest from Sheffield United and Reading this summer but with the new season just three days away, Mackay is hopeful of holding on to the 29-year-old. "Tommy Smith is one of the best three players in this division and he's got a massive contribution to make," he told the London Paper. "We want to keep him. He's our player, he's under contract and he's ready to start the season with us."
