Smith with problems ahead of Iron visit

Walsall will be without Florent Cuvelier for the visit of Scunthorpe while Febian Brandy and Andy Taylor are both huge doubts.

Star midfielder Cuvelier remains sidelined with the hamstring problem that ruled him out of Saturday's 1-1 FA Cup draw at Lincoln.

Forward Brandy (knock) and full-back Taylor (hamstring) also missed the tie and both are highly unlikely to feature against the Iron, who will be looking to bounce back from a 4-0 cup defeat at League Two Gillingham in Brian Laws' first game in charge.

Manager Dean Smith could opt to name an unchanged side while the likes of James Baxendale, Richard Taundry and Paul Downing provide one or two options.

After a promising start to the campaign the Saddlers are now winless in eight matches stretching back to late September.

Scunthorpe's new loan signing Steve Mildenhall is set to make his debut in manager Brian Laws' first league game back in charge.

Laws, back at Glanford Park for a third spell as manager, signed Mildenhall on a month's loan from Millwall and he is expected to replace Sam Slocombe in goal.

But defender David Mirfin is doubtful after being forced out of Saturday's FA Cup defeat at Gillingham after twisting his leg in an awkward fall. Niall Canavan or Callum Kennedy could come into contention if Mirfin fails to make it.

Leading goalscorer Leon Clarke and midfielder David Prutton are expected to return to the starting line-up after being refused permission to play at the weekend by parent clubs Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday respectively.

Midfielder Damien Mozika, who made his first appearance of the season on Saturday following a long-term ankle injury, is expected to start on the bench again as the Iron chase their first win in eight league matches.
