At various times between this Thursday and the end of June, players will be at the club's training ground in Essington to take part in a programme aimed at ensuring each member of Chris Hutchings' squad return with a solid base in which to build upon come July. Physio Jon Whitney has overseen the summer programme over recent years and he firmly believes that consistent exercise, as well as rest, is crucial for the players to come back in peak condition in time for the new campaign. He told the club's official website: "There is a growing demand for players to take responsibility for their general health and fitness levels over the summer. "The maintenance sessions are designed to maintain and monitor fitness levels so that the lads are ready to go from the first day of pre-season. These sessions will give the players the strength and conditioning they need for pre-season training." Whitney added: "Research has shown that after two weeks of inactivity players can lose as much as 20% of their fitness levels. Rest is very important but the players need to keep themselves ticking over and these maintenance sessions are designed to do exactly that."
