Lee Gregory bags brace as Millwall ease past Walsall

Walsall's hopes of taking over at the top of League One were shattered by three second-half goals following a classic away performance from Millwall in a shock 3-0 win at the Banks's Stadium.

Two goals from top-scorer Lee Gregory and a stunner from young debutant right-back Mahlon Romeo handed the Saddlers their first defeat in six league games.

Walsall went into the game with third-choice goalkeeper Liam Roberts (21) making his debut through injuries, and - although he did well in the first half - he could not keep the Lions in the second, and the Saddlers also lost top hitman Tom Bradshaw due to a second-half injury.

Walsall made the early running with a series of quick raids which had the Millwall defence at full stretch, and Jordan Archer did well to keep out a fierce low drive from Andy Taylor with a full-length save.

But as half-time approached, the Lions went close with Roberts having to pull off three quick saves from Romeo, Lee Gregory and Shaun Williams before Anthony Forde hit the bar for Walsall with Archer beaten.

In the second half, however, Gregory turned in a 61st-minute cross from Jed Wallace, Romeo burst through to shoot low past Roberts after 70 minutes and Gregory latched onto a through ball from Williams to drive home his 17th goal the season with 12 minutes remaining.
