Baldock secures Robins safety

A first-half penalty by top scorer Sam Baldock secured Bristol City's League One future with a 1-0 win at the Banks's Stadium.

Baldock hammered home his 23rd goal of the season after Andy Taylor fouled Baldock needlessly in a corner of the box a minute from half time to end any slight hopes Walsall had of making the play-offs.

Walsall should have equalised in the 57th minute when Greg Cunningham fouled Michael Ngoo, but Sam Mantom's soft spot-kick was comfortably saved by Simon Moore.

The Saddlers generally dominated possession but lacked penetration and failed to score for the second game in succession, largely due to the excellence of City centre-backs Nyron Nosworthy and Derrick Williams who hardly put a foot wrong.

Walsall goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell was rarely troubled, but his opposite number, Moore, pulled off two crucial saves from a Mantom free-kick in the first half and a rising drive from Nicky Featherstone late on.

Seven minutes from time City could have had a second goal, but substitute Tyrone Barnett saw his drive saved by O'Donnell.
