Stalemate at the Saddlers

Both teams had penalty claims turned down in the last two minutes as Walsall and Peterborough fought out a 0-0 draw at the Banks's Stadium.

In the 88th minute Ricardo Santos, the Posh central defender, appeared to hand the ball in the box, then Saddlers full-back Ben Purkiss seemed to do the same at the other end following a throw in, but referee Andy Woolmer ignored both claims.

Walsall had more of the play, but without their injured top-scorer Tom Bradshaw they lacked a player who could finish off their impressive raidsw, and Peterborough, watched by Sir Alex Ferguson, settled for ending a run of three successive league defeats.

In a lively first half, Connor Washington lobbed the ball into the net after just three minutes, but the whistle had already gone for offside.

Walsall piled on the pressure with Adam Chambers shooting wide, then home defender Paul Downing gave the ball away and was relieved to see Joe Newell drive high over.

Posh survived again in the 13th minute when Romaine Sawyers fired wide after linking up with Mathieu Manset, but it was the Saddlers' turn to enjoy an escape when a Jon Taylor free-kick led to a goalmouth scramble in which the ball was cleared off the line in the 34th minute.
