Smith states case for the defence

Walsall caretaker manager Dean Smith knows his team must improve defensively if they are to stay up - but he believes they will do just that. The Saddlers, who drew their previous two matches under Smith`s guidance, are bottom of the table again after a 4-2 home defeat to promotion-chasing Huddersfield. "We have given them two goals - the first and the last, and conceded from two set-pieces," said Smith. "We have not got the biggest squad and knew it might be difficult with corners and free-kicks and we shall need to work harder to prevent giving corners away and defend better when balls come into our box. "There are still 22 games to go and I believe we can stay up. "I am enjoying it at the moment. I speak to the chairman regularly and I am hoping we shall bring in some new players next week."
