Smith lands youth team position

Smith replaces Mick Halsall, who left for neighbours Wolves earlier this month, and returns to the midlands club having risen through the ranks before going on to make over 160 appearances between 1989 and 1994. The 38-year-old started his coaching career with Leyton Orient's youth-team before being appointed assistant manager but, along with Martin Ling, he parted ways with the club back in January. Smith told Walsall's official website: "This is a club with a great history and a great tradition and I am looking forward to being part of it again. I can relate to all the young lads here because I've been there and done it. "This club is not too dissimilar to Leyton Orient in that they live in the shadow of bigger clubs. Our biggest selling point is that we have a proven record of producing players for the first team and supporters like nothing more than to see local lads representing their club." Chairman Jeff Bonser added: "As with Chris Hutchings and Martin O'Connor, he has an affinity with this football club and, like Chris and Martin, has captained the club as a player. We are now in a position where three key roles are filled with people who have a passion for this football club."
