The 21-year-old has been a revelation for the Saddlers, who are down to the bare bones at centre-half following the retirement of Stephen Roberts and Clayton McDonald's groin injury. Nevertheless, Smith reckons he can plug the gap and told the Express and Star: "I used to come in because of injuries but now I want to be the main one. I want to stand up and be counted for and be the first one on the teamsheet. "I'm beginning to be more of a leader. I have proved it after playing against a lot of big teams. I've gained more confidence. "If you have more confidence and don't go out there scared then it shows in your performances."
